The Moropelo/Dikoma Cultural Festival and Travel Expo: A Celebration of Culture, Tourism, and Unity

The Moropelo/Dikoma Cultural Festival and Travel Expo is a highly anticipated 5-day outdoor event that brings together the vibrant cultural heritage of Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga. This celebration showcases the homecoming festivities of the young initiated women (BONGWALE) and men (BADIKA) who joyfully engage in dance and mock stick fights, exuding pride and tradition. Alongside these captivating displays, the Travel Expo highlights various local businesses, offering attendees a comprehensive experience of Bushbuckridge. A Cultural Showcase: The heart of the festival lies in the homecoming celebration of the young initiates. Throughout the weekend, the BONGWALE and BADIKA engage in spirited dances and mock stick fights, showcasing their newfound status as men and women within the Mapulana cultural context. Following these ceremonies, initiates find respite at the house of the initiation school permit holder, the principal of KOMA. On Friday night, initiates sleep at the permit holder's house before reuniting with their parents the following Saturday morning. This marks the official presentation of the initiates as women and men, and the families commence further celebrations and festivities. Uniting Tradition and Tourism: DIKOMA, being one of South Africa's most significant initiation celebrations, draws over 6000 initiates and captivates the attention of more than 150,000 people through diverse platforms and activities. In a bid to promote cultural tourism and bolster community benefits, the festival presents an excellent opportunity for locals, private businesses, and government representatives to network and explore avenues for funding and collaboration.
