Thato set on getting people inked at the 1st Annual Alex Tattoo Festival

Tattoo artist Thato, also known as InkGodSA, is set to bring his art to the streets of Gomora, raising awareness about tattoo safety and providing a platform for local tattoo artists to learn about tattooing as a form of body modification.

Thato will be hosting the 1st Annual Alex Tattoo Festival on September 3, 2023, at Marlboro Hall in Sandton.

In an interview with Ledikwa Media, the artist, who hails from Gomora, explained his motivation for organizing the tattoo festival in Alexandra Township.

"As a tattoo artist from Alexandra Township, I have worked at high-end studios in the northern suburbs and noticed a gap between how local artists approach their craft compared to those in upscale studios. This is not due to ignorance but rather a lack of information. So, I wanted to create a platform where local and aspiring artists can learn about tattooing as a form of body modification," he stated.

He further emphasized that the main purpose of the festival is to educate the community about hygiene in tattoo environments and the proper techniques for tattooing and piercings.

"Many people in the township have never been to a tattoo convention, so the best way to describe it is to think of a food market. Instead of food stalls, we will have various tattoo stalls where people can view different artists' works and styles and choose the ones they like to get tattooed by," he explained.

Thato highlighted the importance of treating tattooing as a medical procedure due to the involvement of blood and open wounds. He expressed the need for attendees to understand what to expect when getting a professional tattoo, their rights and responsibilities as clients, and the significance of hygienic practices.

Thato takes pride in his work and is committed to providing a platform for young aspiring artists to thrive in the industry. He encouraged aspiring artists to attend the festival and learn from experienced professionals who have been practicing tattooing correctly for a significant period.

"We also have a YouTube channel called Alex Tattoo Festival (tattoo conversations), where we interview elite tattoo artists in the country. We discuss topics such as hygiene and the daily activities in tattoo studios. So, if you can make it to the convention, it's another opportunity to learn," he concluded.

Thato extended an invitation to the public and the community of Alexandra to attend the tattoo festival, urging them to experience it firsthand and take part in masterclasses that will educate everyone about the tattoo industry.
